CHAOS Tuesday “Normalized Systems”

1 December 2015 onderzoeken

The notion and causes of “Crapola”—that is code which is rusting away and preventing progress on lifeblood advancements has to be understood. Even brand–new applications have plenty of Crapola next to unused features and functions. Refactoring improves the understandability of the code, can reduce software errors by eliminating software and reduces operating costs. A novel academic approach called Normalized Systems takes Modernization to the next level, creating a constant and consistent effort. This means you should never have to modernize again. Normalized Systems theory is a rational way to evolve applications and to reduce complexity and maintain quality. University of Antwerp department of Management Information Systems has been researching how to design applications and systems using Normalized Systems theory. The fine-grained approach allows not only for refactoring by just removing Crapola modules or components that no longer are needed or used, but in addition Normalized Systems provides for applications and systems to be able to evolve over time; they are designed not only to accommodate change and to promote agility by modernization of applications into stable ’normalized’ systems.
